POP vs Gypsum False Ceiling: Which Should You Pick?

Updated 18 August 2026 · D Woods Villa Interior

Gypsum gives a better finish, installs faster and creates less site mess. POP costs less and handles curves and custom mouldings that gypsum cannot. For most flat ceilings with cove lighting, gypsum is the better choice at about ₹85 per square foot against ₹65 for POP.

What actually separates them

POP is plaster of Paris applied wet over a mesh or board base. It is skill-dependent: a good applicator produces an excellent ceiling, an average one produces a ceiling that develops hairline cracks along stress lines within two or three years.

Gypsum board is a factory-made sheet screwed to a metal grid, with joints taped and finished. Because the panel itself is manufactured, the finish is consistent regardless of who installs it. The variable becomes the framing quality rather than the surface skill.

For a plain ceiling with a cove, gypsum is the more reliable outcome. For anything curved, domed or with traditional mouldings, POP is the only practical option.

Ceiling height decides more than material

Most NCR apartments have a slab height of about 10 feet. A full false ceiling with a 200 mm drop leaves roughly 9 feet 4 inches, which is comfortable. A 300 mm drop for deep coves leaves 9 feet, which starts to feel low in a small bedroom.

Our usual approach in bedrooms is a peripheral cove only, keeping the centre of the ceiling at slab height. It gives you the lighting effect without losing the volume. In living and dining rooms, where the floor area is larger, a full ceiling reads better.

The lighting is the actual point

A false ceiling with badly planned lighting is an expensive way to make a room lower. The ceiling exists to conceal wiring and create indirect light; if the lighting is an afterthought, skip the ceiling and save the money.

A workable scheme has three layers: cove or perimeter light for ambient level, recessed spots for task areas, and one decorative fixture as a focal point. Ask for a lighting layout drawing alongside the ceiling drawing. Most firms produce the ceiling plan and let the electrician decide the rest, which is how you end up with spotlights over the middle of the floor.

Where neither belongs

What to specify

For gypsum: board brand and thickness, GI framing section and spacing, joint tape type, and the number of putty and primer coats. For POP: base material, thickness, and whether it is over mesh or board.

Framing spacing matters more than most people realise. A metal grid at 600 mm centres is standard; stretching it to 900 mm to save material is a common shortcut and it produces visible sag within a few years.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, POP or gypsum false ceiling?

Gypsum for most flat ceilings. It installs faster, creates less site mess and gives a consistently smooth finish. POP costs less and is the only practical option for curves, domes and traditional mouldings.

How much does false ceiling cost per square foot?

POP runs 65 to 80 rupees per square foot and gypsum 85 to 110. Lighting fixtures are usually quoted separately, so check whether your rate includes them.

Does a false ceiling make a room feel lower?

It can. A 200 mm drop in a 10 foot slab leaves about 9 feet 4 inches, which is comfortable. A 300 mm drop leaves 9 feet, which feels low in small bedrooms. A peripheral cove avoids the problem.

Should I put false ceiling in bedrooms?

Often a peripheral cove is better than a full ceiling. It gives you the indirect lighting effect while keeping the centre of the ceiling at slab height, which preserves the sense of volume.

What should I specify in the quotation?

For gypsum: board brand and thickness, GI framing section and spacing, joint tape type and number of putty coats. Framing at 600 mm centres is standard; stretching to 900 mm causes visible sag within a few years.
