What Wardrobe Design Costs

Wardrobes are priced by running foot of frontage and shutter finish, not by the size of the bedroom. A standard 7-foot bedroom wardrobe in laminate starts at ₹1,20,000. The same unit in acrylic runs closer to ₹1,75,000, and in PU around ₹1,95,000. Internal organisers, drawers and lighting are quoted as separate lines so you can see what each addition costs.

ItemStarting price
Laminate, 7ft run₹1,20,000
Acrylic, 7ft run₹1,75,000
PU, 7ft run₹1,95,000
Sliding door system, add₹28,000
Internal lighting, per unit₹6,500
Loft above wardrobe₹22,000

Hinged Versus Sliding in Wardrobe Design

Hinged doors give you the full opening and cost less. Sliding doors save the swing space in front of the wardrobe, which matters in a bedroom under 120 square feet, but you can only ever see half the wardrobe at once and the track adds cost. Our default recommendation is hinged unless the room genuinely cannot take the swing.

What Goes Inside

This is where wardrobes are won or lost, and where most quotations are vague. A hanging rod at one height wastes the space below it. We plan long-hang and short-hang zones separately, put drawers at waist height rather than at the bottom, and size the top shelf for the luggage you actually own rather than a standard depth.

Full Height, Without Exception

Stopping a wardrobe at seven feet and leaving a gap above it produces a dust shelf, not storage. Running to the slab adds roughly a third more capacity for a small increase in cost, and it removes the cleaning problem entirely. In flats with ten-foot ceilings this is the single best value decision available.

Materials We Specify for Wardrobe Design

Carcasses are BWP-grade plywood, never MDF or particle board, because NCR humidity is hard on engineered boards. Hinges and channels are Hettich, Häfele or Blum depending on shutter weight, and the brand is printed on the quotation rather than described as "branded hardware". Edge banding is 2mm on exposed edges. See our guides to choosing plywood and comparing hardware.

Common Mistakes in Wardrobe Design

Three come up in almost every wardrobe design survey we do. The first is a single hanging rod running the full width, which wastes the metre of dead space beneath every shirt. The second is drawers at floor level, where you have to crouch to use them daily — waist height is where the drawers you actually open should sit. The third is measuring the wardrobe to the furniture rather than to the clothes: most people need far more short-hang than long-hang, and the standard split gets it backwards.

Wardrobe Design for a Compact Bedroom

In bedrooms under 110 square feet the wardrobe usually has to run along the wall opposite the bed, and the temptation is to reduce its depth to save floor space. Do not. Below 550mm a hanger sits at an angle and the door will not close cleanly. Take the depth and lose the length instead, or move to sliding doors and accept seeing half the wardrobe at a time.

Loft Storage in Wardrobe Design, and When to Skip It

A loft above the wardrobe holds seasonal luggage well and costs around ₹22,000. It is worth building where the slab is over ten feet and you genuinely store suitcases. Below that height you end up with a shallow shelf you need a stool to reach and never use. In compact flats, hydraulic storage beds hold the same load and cost less.

Wardrobe Design — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does wardrobe design cost?

From ₹1,20,000 for a standard 7-foot bedroom wardrobe in laminate. Acrylic and PU finishes run higher. Price follows running feet and finish, not room size.

Hinged or sliding doors?

Hinged unless the room cannot take the door swing. Hinged costs less, gives full access to the wardrobe, and has no track to maintain.

Should wardrobes go to the ceiling?

Yes. The gap above a seven-foot wardrobe collects dust and stores nothing. Running to the slab adds about a third more capacity.

What plywood do you use?

BWP-grade throughout, never MDF or particle board. The grade is written on your quotation, not described as premium.

Can I add lighting inside?

Yes, around ₹6,500 per unit for sensor-triggered internal lighting. It is worth it in deep wardrobes where the back is otherwise dark.
