Which Plywood Should You Actually Use in Your Interiors?

Use IS:710 BWP grade in kitchens and bathrooms, and IS:303 BWR grade everywhere else. MR grade belongs in furniture that will never meet moisture, and commercial ply belongs nowhere in a home interior. Grade matters far more than brand.

The difference between BWP and BWR is the adhesive. BWP uses phenol formaldehyde, which does not release under prolonged moisture. BWR uses melamine urea formaldehyde, which resists moisture but eventually gives way under sustained exposure. That distinction is the entire reason your sink cabinet either survives ten years or fails in four.
Where each one actually goes
A sensible specification is mixed, not uniform. Insisting on BWP throughout a home is a waste of money; using BWR under a sink is a repair waiting to happen.
- BWP: kitchen base units, especially the sink and hob run, bathroom vanities, utility area cabinetry, and the bottom 300 mm of any unit standing on a floor that gets mopped.
- BWR: wardrobes, TV units, crockery units, study tables, kitchen wall units above the counter.
- MR: loose furniture in bedrooms and living rooms that will never be in contact with water.
Seven checks you can run yourself
You do not need any technical knowledge for these. Each takes under a minute at the shop.
- Look at the edge. Layers should be even in thickness with no gaps, voids or dark patches. Gaps mean the core has hollows, and hollows collapse under a screw.
- Count the plies. An 18 mm board should have 13 or more layers. Fewer means thicker, cheaper veneers and a weaker board.
- Lift it. Good plywood is noticeably dense for its size. Lightness usually means a softwood core.
- Press a nail into the edge. If it sinks in with thumb pressure alone, the core timber is too soft.
- Check flatness. Stand the sheet on its edge and sight along it. A visible bow will never straighten out and will fight you during installation.
- Look for the ISI mark and the IS number. Both should be printed, along with a batch or licence number. A mark without a number is worth nothing.
- Boil test on an offcut. Ask for a small piece. Boil it for two hours. Genuine BWP holds together; anything else delaminates at the edges.
Brand matters less than you think
Reputable brands are worth a modest premium for consistency, not because their IS:710 is fundamentally different from another manufacturer's IS:710. The standard defines the performance. What you are buying with a brand is a higher probability that the sheet in front of you actually meets it.
The larger risk is not brand choice, it is substitution. A quotation that says "branded ply" without naming grade or manufacturer permits anything. Insist that the grade appears as an IS number, and that the brand is named without an "or equivalent" attached.
What about HDHMR and MDF?
HDHMR is denser than plywood and takes a fine paint or PU finish beautifully, which is why it is popular for shutters. It is heavier, holds screws less well over repeated removal, and needs properly sealed edges near water. It is a good shutter material and a poor carcass material for wet zones.
MDF should not be in a kitchen at all. It swells irreversibly on contact with water, and once swollen there is no repair. It is acceptable for decorative panelling in dry rooms and nothing else.
Termite treatment
Anti-termite treated plywood costs about 8 to 10 percent more and is worth it in ground floor homes and anywhere with a known local problem. It is not a substitute for treating the site before installation, which should appear as its own line in your quotation.
What to write into your contract
One sentence is usually enough: "Carcass in kitchen and bathroom zones to be IS:710 BWP grade, all other carcass to be IS:303 BWR grade, brand [name], all four edges machine banded." That single line removes the most common substitution in the industry.
