What Warranty Should You Get on Interior Work?
Updated 18 August 2026 · D Woods Villa Interior
A standard interior warranty covers manufacturing defects in modular work, usually for five to ten years on hardware mechanisms and one to two years on installation. It almost never covers water damage, normal wear, finish deterioration or anything a third party has touched. Get the terms in writing before signing.

What is typically covered
| Component | Typical cover | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Hinges and channels | 5 to 10 years, often lifetime on mechanism | Manufacturer warranty, passed through |
| Carcass, manufacturing defect | 3 to 5 years | Delamination or failure not caused by moisture |
| Shutters, manufacturing defect | 1 to 3 years | Warping or bonding failure |
| Installation workmanship | 1 to 2 years | Alignment, fixing, levelling |
| Countertop, joint failure | 1 year | Rarely longer |
| Painting | 1 year, sometimes 2 | Peeling or flaking, not fading |
What is almost always excluded
- Water damage. The single largest cause of kitchen failure, and excluded from every warranty we have seen. A slow leak under the sink is the homeowner's problem.
- Normal wear. Scratches, dulling of gloss, handle loosening.
- Hardware adjustment after year one. Soft-close mechanisms need periodic adjustment as carcasses settle. Most warranties cover the part, not the visit.
- Third-party interference. If another carpenter has touched the work, cover generally ends.
- Misuse. Overloading a drawer, hanging from a shutter, standing on a base unit.
- Natural material variation. Veneer and stone vary between batches; this is not a defect.
- Colour fading from sunlight, which affects laminate and paint over years.
The conditions that quietly void cover
These appear in the fine print and catch people out.
- Unreported leaks. If a leak existed and was not reported promptly, resulting damage is excluded. Check under your sink twice a year.
- Abrasive cleaning. Scouring pads and thinner-based cleaners on gloss finishes void finish cover, and they will permanently mark the surface anyway.
- Modification. Adding a shelf, moving a unit or drilling into cabinetry usually ends cover on that item.
- Non-payment. Warranties commonly activate only on full settlement, which is worth knowing if you are withholding a retention amount.
- Missed servicing. Some warranties require an annual check. Skipping it can void the cover entirely.

What to ask for in writing
- The warranty document itself, attached to the contract rather than described verbally
- Duration for each component separately, not a single headline number
- The full exclusions list
- Response time commitment for a warranty call
- Whether service visits during the warranty period are chargeable
- Whether the warranty transfers if you sell the flat
That last point matters more than people expect. Most interior warranties are non-transferable, which means they end the day you sell. If you are finishing a home you intend to sell within a few years, ask.
What a fair warranty looks like
Ten years on hardware mechanisms passed through from the manufacturer, five years on carcass manufacturing defects, two years on installation workmanship, one year on countertop joints and painting. Free service visits for the first year, chargeable after. Response within 72 hours of a reported issue.
That is a realistic set of terms and most competent firms will agree to it. What you should be sceptical of is a flat "ten year warranty" with no component breakdown, because it usually means ten years on hardware and considerably less on everything else.
Making a claim
Report in writing with photographs and the date. Verbal reports have a way of not existing later. Keep your contract, warranty document, itemised quotation and handover snag list together. If a firm becomes unresponsive, consumer disputes can be filed through the National Consumer Helpline, though a well-documented claim rarely needs to go that far.
Frequently asked questions
What does an interior warranty actually cover?
Typically manufacturing defects: hardware mechanisms for 5 to 10 years, carcass for 3 to 5 years, shutters for 1 to 3 years and installation workmanship for 1 to 2 years. Coverage varies by component rather than being a single figure.
What is excluded from most interior warranties?
Water damage, normal wear, hardware adjustment after the first year, third-party interference, misuse, natural material variation and colour fading. Water damage is the largest cause of kitchen failure and is universally excluded.
What can void an interior warranty?
Unreported leaks, abrasive or thinner-based cleaning on gloss finishes, modifying the work, non-payment of the final amount, and missing a required annual service visit.
Is an interior warranty transferable if I sell?
Usually not. Most are non-transferable and end when the property changes hands. If you intend to sell within a few years, ask about this specifically before signing.
What does a fair warranty look like?
Ten years on hardware mechanisms, five on carcass defects, two on installation workmanship, one on countertop joints and painting, with free service visits in year one and a 72-hour response commitment.
